Introduction

I led the design of a zero to one AI powered learning experience for Cengage, focused on helping students actively practice career readiness skills instead of passively consuming static content.

The work explored simulations, personalized feedback, skill dashboards, and AI assisted learning loops that could help students understand where they were improving and what to practice next.

About this case study

This page highlights selected Cengage work across AI powered learning, career readiness simulations, skill feedback, dashboards, and personalized learning experiences.

Because parts of the work are confidential, this case study focuses on the product direction, design problems, learning flow, and interface patterns without exposing sensitive product details.

03

Overview

Traditional learning platforms are often passive and assignment driven. This project explored a next generation AI powered learning experience designed to increase engagement through simulations, real time feedback, and personalized learning paths.

The goal was to help students practice career readiness skills through interactive scenarios, skill tracking, and continuous feedback rather than relying only on static content.

Problem

  • Learning platforms often rely on static assignments, which can lead to lower engagement.
  • Students may consume content passively instead of actively practicing.
  • Personalized learning loops are limited, making it harder for students to understand what to improve next.
  • Students need clearer feedback that supports continuous skill development.
05

Role

  • Led zero to one product design for an AI powered career readiness learning platform.
  • Partnered with product and the broader team to inform direction through student and instructor research, team workshops, and competitor analysis.
  • Defined MVP flows, interaction patterns, feedback systems, and high fidelity web experiences.
  • Designed student and instructor experiences across dashboards, simulations, conversations, review, scoring, and personalized guidance.
06

What informed the direction

01Active practice was more valuable than passive content consumption.
02Clear feedback and visible progress could help students understand what to improve next.
03Personalized scenarios could make career readiness practice feel more relevant.
04The experience needed to connect learning, practice, feedback, and improvement in one place.

Solution and structure

Designed an AI powered learning loop built around five connected stages.

  1. 1
DashboardTracks skills, progress, and learning gaps.
  2. 2
AI simulationGenerates real world career readiness scenarios.
  3. 3
PracticeEnables interactive conversations and applied learning.
  4. 4
    FeedbackProvides scoring, insights, and guidance.
  5. 5
    RepeatSupports continuous improvement over time.

UX flow

  1. 1
Identify skill gapsSurface what needs work through dashboard insights.
  2. 2
Generate simulationsCreate scenarios based on the student's learning goals.
  3. 3
Engage in real timePractice through simulated, interactive conversation.
  4. 4
Receive feedbackGet structured feedback and scoring after each session.
  5. 5
Improve and repeatIterate on weaker areas to build skill over time.
